Bea’s at Maltby St… Bacon-licious

As you may already know, Maltby St market, under the arches in Bermondsey, is much touted as the new Borough Market.  A small, perfectly formed version of a great foodie find and more importantly, without the crowds.

Bea’s Diner, Bea’s the Third to you & I, is one of those who have a home under the rail arches and if you cast your minds back to the summer, was home to the absolutely divine Crawfish Broil feast.

So a weekend brunch catch up was had with blooming Kat from wunder-eating blog Lady Loves Cake, gorgeous Jen from She Went Away and the lovely Lindsey!

Given the above sign, there’s no way I could turn down the pancakes.  Buttermilk pancakes with the roasted strawberries were featured on a few orders along with sides of the most heavenly bacon I have ever tasted.

It must be said here that I love bacon.   In any form.  Streaky, Canadian, Back, Turkey, I’ll take it all – I’ve even heard good things about Vege Bacon!

This bacon in particular could win awards – Smoky, crispy, maple sweet but not cloying-ly so, I could have devoured strips of the stuff.

The pancakes were soft and fluffy, the roasted strawberries a different but delicious accompaniment to the usual, all topped off with the perfect Bacon.

Jen (below) too shared my views on the bacon.  Not a piece shall go unwasted!

Seating is basic – picnic tables & benches to share.  While you’re certainly not discouraged from lingering, the benches make it difficult to laze about over your drinks, not least due to those queueing up to grab your seat when you depart.

All in all, a place I would come again and bring friends.  And then check out the rest of the market afterwards!

  1. I’ve heard really good things about Maltby market but mixed things about Bea’s (some say she’s stretching herself too thin) so nice to see a goodish review! Bacon, yum.
